Meng Kim Phiev is a 12-year-old boy in third grade at the Sozaburo
and Yasuko Inoue School.  (August, 2001)

Meng Kim Phiev is 12 years old. He is studying in third grade and ranked sixth out of his 40 classmates at the end of the last school year.  He has one sister and four brothers. His parents are farmers and live in the same village as the Sozaburo and Yasuko Inoue School. His house is about 1 km away from the school.

In Their Own Words

On school subjects: “I am good at Khmer, and mathematics.  I like all four subjects, but Khmer and mathematics are my favorites.”

 

On his hobbies: “I like to play football with my friends.”

 

On leaving his village: “I have never been outside of this village, but if I could go anywhere, I would like to go to China.  Most of my relatives are Chinese and I want to learn more about Chinese culture.”  [Cambodia, like many Southeast Asian countries, has a substantial ethnic Chinese minority.  Though they may not speak the language, many ethnic Chinese consider themselves as much Chinese as Cambodian.] “I have never been outside of this village, but if I could go anywhere, I would like to go to China.  Most of my relatives are Chinese and I want to learn more about Chinese culture.”  [Cambodia, like many Southeast Asian countries, has a substantial ethnic Chinese minority.  Though they may not speak the language, many ethnic Chinese consider themselves as much Chinese as Cambodian.
