The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Sralao Tong Nippon

Foundation School

Phou Sophear is a third grade student at the Sralao Tong Nippon Foundation School. She is ranked fourth in her class. She is fifteen years old. Both of her parents are farmers, and she has two brothers. She walks for 15 minutes to get to school.

On her studies: I am better in Khmer than in any other subject in the school. I think Khmer is easier because it is our mother tongue. It is easy to learn. I am bad in arithmetic because I have no one to help me at home, only during school hours. I have an older brother who has more education than I have, but he has never taught me at home. Moreover, I have no math textbooks to read.”

On the new building:

Last year, I had to walk five kilometers to get the school. It took me one hour. It was very hard for me to walk such a long way for school. Now I have a new school building near my house, and it’s even made of concrete. I am very happy because I save time. Now I only spend ten minutes walking to get to school. I like going to school because it a pleasure to see the nice, new concrete school building.”
