The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Svay Sar Nippon

Foundation School

Tao Samphas is a third grade student at the Svay Sar Nippon Foundation School

On herself:

I am eleven years old and have five siblings. Two of them come to this school with me. My parents are farmers, but they also rear pigs and distill alcohol. Our house is very near the school.

On the new building:

I like the new school. It’s not hot there. In old building, the wind could not pass through the classroom and it was very hot.

Favorite subject:

Math. I like multiplication. I also like Khmer language.

On her spare time:

I help my parents cook rice for the use of distilling alcohol. When I get up I go straight to the kitchen and cook rice. When the rice is cooked, I take a bowl of it to dry on a mat. I sprinkle a powder on the rice, and then squeeze and put it in a jar. The rice is kept it the jar for two nights. When the mix is fermented properly, I put it back in a pot and cook it again. The resultant liquid extracted from the condensed mix is the alcohol. I do this together with my mother.

In the future:

I’d like to be a teacher, because teachers can give explanations to the problems that students might have in their study. If I could be anything, I would be a school director and keep the school very nice.

If she could travel anywhere:

I’d like to go to Siem Reap province. I want to see the many sculptures there.
