The Cambodia Rural School Project

The Ta En Nippon

Foundation School

Sao So Ly is a fifth grade student at the Ta En Nippon Foundation School.
Out of the forty students of his class he was ranked first.

On himself:

I am fourteen years old. I have one younger sister. My mother sells snacks and drinks. My father is a soldier since we returned from Site II [refugee camp], and he can’t find another job. He lives at the far away army base and I can see him only  once a month.

On the new building:

I am happy with the new building. At the old school things weren’t as easy as in the new school. Whenever it rained, rain would come in through the roof. Classes would stop until the rain stopped. Since the new building was built I have been more encouraged to study, both at school and at home. I want to study hard and want to be a teacher in the future.

On his spare time:

In my spare time I help my mother. I collect water and chop wood. When I have time I do my homework. I also like playing soccer with my nephew in front of our house.

If he could do anything:

I would like to work for the government. I want to help the country.

What would you do if you were Prime Minister?

I would help poor people who have problems with flooding and those that have no water in the dry season.
