I am married, and have six sons and three daughters. My wife and I are farmers, but I am also the village chief. I have lived in this village for the last 40 years.

On the new building:

I was very, very happy when the new school was built. People around here used to be very worried about the danger of the old school collapsing. The old school was built in 1982.

On a few wooden poles stacked in the school grounds:

The wood is to make flowerbeds. We plan to grow flowers around the school, but haven’t got around to doing so yet since the rainy season has just started, and the well is new. So we have to wait for water. We also have to make a fence around the school to prevent cows from eating the flowers. When all of this is taken care of, we will plant flowers to make the school beautiful.

On this area:

This used to be a very dangerous area. During the civil war, it was one of the borders between the Khmer Rouge and government troops. The government would hold this village for a while, the Khmer Rouge would get it back, and then the government… back and forth, back and forth… When the Khmer Rouge came here, they used the old school as their headquarters for a long time.
