In Their Own Words. . .
On the new building: | “I like this new building very much, because it is very different from the old school building and any other building in the village. The old building had a thatched roof with many holes in it, so it was difficult to teach the students with the rain coming through the roof. The villagers like the building, too.”
|
On school subjects: | “I love being a teacher because I want the students here to learn Khmer history and culture and I don’t want them to be stupid or ignorant. The children only really pay attention to Khmer and mathematics, because their parents tell them that these are the only important subjects. The parents think that children only need to know how to read, write and calculate, nothing more. I think that all of the subjects are important for the kids to learn.”

On the school community: | “The parents of the students and the rest of the school community are very happy to have this new building. They push their students to come to school and they think it is wonderful that their children can study. They always come to see the kids at the school when they have free time. In 1993, the UN persuaded the villagers to tear down their old building. Once we tore it down, they promised to build a new building for the kids to study. But they never built it, so everyone is glad that we have this building now.” |
