The Uncle Mark Lutz School

September, 2001

Nguon Chantha is a 13-year-old fifth grade student at the Uncle Mark Lutz School.  He was ranked second in his class of 31 students.  His parents are ice makers in the village.

In Their Own Words. . .

On the new school: “I Like the new school because no one bothers me when I am studying, it is not noisy like the old school and it is more comfortable, so I can better understand what my teacher is explaining.”

On school subjects:  “My favorite lessons are mathematics, applied science, and social science.  The reason why I like mathematics is because I can understand it quickly.  With social science I enjoy learning about the history of the kings and with applied science I learn about birds and animals and plants.  I don’t like learning the Khmer language because it is very complicated and rather boring.”

On his hobbies: “I like talking about my lessons with friends and reading my lesson books.  I like to help my parents with their work, too.”

On his family: “My parents want me to graduate because they don’t want me to be like my older brother.  He studied until ninth grade and then stopped learning to help my sister at her job.”

On his future: “I plan to graduate from primary school and continue at May Sang secondary school.  After I finish from May Sang I will go on to high school because both my great aunt and uncle want me to graduate and become a nurse or teacher in public school.  I would like to be a nurse so if my family or neighbors are ever sick, I can help them.”

Message for Mr. Lutz: “I would like to thank Mr. Mark Lutz for providing a new school building for my younger sister and me so that we can gain knowledge.  I wish him good health.”
