Number Eight

(November, 2001)

Lath Chan is a 17-year-old sixth grade student at the World Mate School Number Eight.  He was ranked second among his 11 classmates last year.  He has four brothers and three sisters.  He lives with his mother; his father died 10 years ago when he was in a car that drove over a landmine.

In Their Own Words. . .

On school subjects: “Last year, the fifth grade subjects were easy, but this year is much more difficult.  Mathematics is hard for me, especially fractions.  Khmer is my favorite subject.  I always get good scores in it.”

On his future: “When I grow up I want to be a teacher.  Students, villagers and many people respect a teacher.  After primary school, I plan to go to study at high school in Stung Treng province.  My grandmother and sister are living there, and they have promised to support me while I study.”
